And here I thought you assume the users of your software know what they are doing. And raging forum posts are a good thing right? But I guess the security implications would be too severe.

Did you make up your mind on monthly auto-tagging?

Could you perhaps adapt the code for the updater to accept a tar.gz as a file upload? That way a person could grab any tar.gz snapshot they wanted from github and update without having to leave the browser, and you still would not need to bother with 'releases'.
