Some animated gif entries are doubled

Postby Halfwalker » 15 Nov 2015, 00:07

Not sure if this is a bug or what ... I've noticed that some entries with an animated gif seem to have that gif doubled. There are two of them, one below the other, and they're not playing in sync. Sometimes it's not an animated gif, just a regular image that's doubled.

For example, here's an animated one from Gizmodo pointing to Gawker

Image

Yet others will work fine - there are a bunch also from Gizmodo pointing to Gawker that are proper single gifs.

Any ideas ?

I'm sure there isn't. But something weird is going on. Anyone else seeing this ?

btw, I'm using 1.15.3+dsfg-1~webupd8~trusty3 from the webupd8team PPA

I have auth_internal, af_fsckportal, note and videoframes. That's it.

Did someone say Gawker?

I'm not familiar with exactly what's going on there, but repeating the URL for the GIF sounds awfully suspicious when you're having a problem with doubled gifs.

Have you tried disabling your 2 year old third-party plugin to see if it might be the culprit? Failing that, the problem with a Gawker feed is probably what it always is; Gawker.

Yup - disabled all, no difference. Here's another one that does it - not animated, but doesn't have the doubled-url with data-asset-url. To see the whole thing search gizmodo for "coffee choice"

<img src="https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--4xrp37XS--/c_scale,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/1521212362910654128.jpg"style="width: 100%;" alt=""data-anim-src="https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--96smk3qb--/c_scale,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/1521212362910654128.gif" data-mp4-src="https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--d9wuo0mE--/c_scale,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/1521212362910654128.mp4" data-webm-src="https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--2cRBQP8r--/c_scale,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/1521212362910654128.webm"/>

Interestingly, the two urls there, one .png and one .gif, are the same image, so that must be where this particular version of doubling is coming from.

Is it just mis-parsing of the tags ?

The "Feed didn't parse" one ? I'm ashamed to say I didn't see it. Checking it out now.

also check the rules, not that it is likely to matter in this case, but still

Hrm - didn't get much out the feed checker. It seemed to show everything as doubled.

The rules ? What context ?

btw - thanks.

Ah. <blush>

It's the standard gizmodo feed - http://gizmodo.com/index.xml

It only seems to happen with some of the entries, not all. For example, the "Now You Can Learn to Code With Minecraft" one at http://gizmodo.com/now-you-can-learn-to-code-with-minecraft-1742796809?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+gizmodo%2Ffull+%28Gizmodo%29 is doubled, but the next entry "It's Secret History Week on Gizmodo and io9" is a single image.

Disclaimer 1: I had assumed http://gizmodo.com/rss/vip for full entries and no ads. An ass has been made out of me and me.
Disclaimer 2: I still have a grudge against Gawker even I can't explain.

Both the built-in feed parser in Firefox, and the feed checker also double the headline image for the Minecraft post, so this is looking like a not-a-ttrss issue. That being said, time to redeem myself with some actual troubleshooting.

Note: code has been cleaned up to be slightly more readable.

If you're not familiar with HTML, an tag is a straight up "here thar be a picture." I'm still not sure what the data-asset-url tag's purpose is supposed to be, but you'll notice that there's two img tags, and if you look closer, you'll notice it's the same file name, but a different path. It looks like that's just so they have two slightly different sizes, but both pictures are the same thing, and that's flat out why it's doubled in this specific case.

Edit:
Also the full post feed doesn't have ads, and doesn't have a doubled picture for that entry, so that might solve your problem.

maybe on the actual site some javascript magic goes over the data- attributes and does something with the tags, tt-rss ignores all that and just shows whatever is in the feed. which looks like, amazingly enough, two images.
