Want to translate tt-rss into your language?

Postby fox » 11 Aug 2007, 10:31

Due to Transifex being buggy and clumsy to deal with, new way of working with translations mostly involves you sending me pull requests on Github. I'm sorry if it's harder, but such is life.

The desired workflow:

1. New translations

Get the , translate into your language, make a fork on Github, place resulting messages.po into locale/desired language/LC_MESSAGES/ and send me a pull request.

2. Updating existing translations

Make a fork on github, edit messages.po file for your language (e.g. locale/ru_RU/LC_MESSAGES/messages.po to update russian translation), send me a pull request on github.

The requested URL /~fox/testbox/tt-rss/messages.pot was not found on this server.

Could you set it please to another location?

Greetings Chris

Hi Fox.

I updated to 1.6.0 and noticed that a lot of stuff I had translated was still in English. Checking messages.po in Github, I saw that the strings that have the '#, fuzzy' line appear in English even if they are translated. Is it a bug? Or are translators supposed to remove the fuzzy line? Thanks.

Thanks. Googling "fuzzy gettext" is not so easy when one is a non-technical user who doesn't know he is using gettext in the first place, and doesn't know if fuzzy is part of the code or a developer comment, and despite having absolutely zero tech background has volunteered to try a complex technical tool (github) to translate something that he had already translated in Transifex (a work that disappeared).

I'll remove the fuzzy line where necessary.

I couldn't imagine someone would bother translating gettext files without knowing what gettext actually is. Guess I was wrong. :)

Well, sorry if I overreacted a little bit. Finding out stuff as gettext is complicated for nontechnical users who don't know even where to start. I usually do my homework, but I read about the Transifex to Github change some 4 days before release, and I wanted to get the thing translated for the next release, so I had to do it in a rush. After that, your response sounded a bit rude to me, but hey, it's not like we are nuns here. :)

I removed the fuzzy tag. Sending pull request. Learned to create messages.po and testing the translation in my server. There are still many untranslated strings in the interface, such as the whole Personal Data in preferences, but they are not in messages.mo.

Yep, I might have forgotten a few things, it's easy to fix though, usually it only involves wrapping string literals into __() and running update_translations.sh to update everything.

Looks like it's a bug - the script that updates translation files didn't work correctly on nested classes/ directory, so translations were partially broken. I have fixed this in trunk, thanks!

I'm a new user of tt-rss and I must say that this application is great! I am very impressed with what you have created.

As part of my testing I decided to quickly translate the UI to my native language Swedish (the sv_SE locale). Unfortunately I didn't read this forum before I did so I am afraid I have not followed the correct procedure.

I have attached the messages.po file and hope that you can will find it useful.
