Behavior change for Automatically mark articles as read

Postby ziffusion » 03 Apr 2013, 19:36

When this option is set, the previous articles should be marked as READ when scrolling past (current behavior) AND clicking on an article (requested behavior).

This probably matches the expectation of a user who enables this option. His mindset is most likely to want previous articles marked READ as he scrolls by or click past other articles.

Also mark all articles in previous feeds. And all articles published on friday. Ah, mark everything, HIS MINDSET is probably up to it!

I don't quite understand what is so outrageous about this request. Maybe you can help me understand.

I am simply talking about the articles in the current view (in the reading pane). You already support marking articles READ as the user scrolls past them. Why is asking for similar behavior when he clicks past articles, too much to ask?

Or is this just a knee jerk response because you are just so overly impressed by yourself?

:D
One strange behavior I notice is that ttrss often marks articles as read BEFORE you scroll to them, probably more often if articles have only many large images in it which take time to load, but for a brief moment several newer articles appear on screen...

Yeah that is something that actually might happen if you keep scrolling down while new batch of stuff loads from the server.

In general, if that plagues you a lot, disable auto marking as read. I'm not quite ready to fix this properly because it's a surprisingly complex thing. And I suck at programming. :)

It doesn't... It's only a little annoying sometimes...
I recall the same problem in GReader, but they've fixed it somehow long ago, as well as UI unresponsiveness while new items are loading (plus, Opera 12 has quite slow DOM traversal performance, compared to Chrome)...

PS: That's quite weird to communicate in English when we're both Russian... :D

If I get this right. Rick click on the article header -> mark above read.

Yes, I think that's right. Would be nice if it happened automatically, similar to the behavior with the preference setting "Automatically mark articles as read". I mean, in addition to marking READ when scrolling past, also do it when clicking past. Just a nicer UX. Reader has a similar behavior. And you could do it when that preference is set.

Just a suggestion.

[quote="fox"]>Reader has a similar behavior.

Yeah, I know you don't like hearing that. But you are smart. And smart people don't dismiss good ideas just because they didn't invent them.

Whatever you may think about the Reader, it did many things well. This was a good UX feature. No harm in considering it.

I'll try and make my case. Folks who have a lot of articles to get through, do like that UX of being able to quickly scan through a stream of articles, ignore most of the cruft, and click on the articles of interest. What they blow by (and not click on), they want gone (without having to do anything to make that happen). Your existing feature "Automatically mark articles as read" already addresses this UX, and doing this on clicks will only make that better.

The behavior is optional anyways.

I hope one day people would evolve to understand that suddenly changing existing functionality because some other web service nobody on this site ever gave two shits about for many years finally croaked is not a particularly great idea. Some day.

But no, a google reader user has graced us with their presence. The UI design is impeccable. We must change everything to match.

smh
