Hide unread count option

Postby Cas » 01 Jun 2013, 04:06

It would be nice to have an option in preference to hide the unread count for feeds and the global unread in the title.

Although the former can be solved with a custom theme and is merely aesthetic the latter is an issue on Firefox when tt-rss is 'pinned' because whenever feeds update and the count increases the tab will highlight thus is distracting with a lot of updating feeds.

For myself I have disabled the relevant updateTitle code in tt-rss.js but I think other users might also find this option useful.

I have about 60+ feeds and of those at least 10-20 of them will have new items every update, increasing the total unread count into the hundreds on a daily basis thus the global unread count becomes a meaningless figure.

I already mentioned that with the global unread count the Firefox tab indicator keeps informing me that new items are available which will always be the case on every feed update so again becomes meaningless and draws my attention needlessly.

This also applies to individual feed count with the difference being that for low volume or important feeds all I care about is whether there are any unread items, the number is irrelevant as I will always aim to read them all, and the normal/bold font does the job nicely of indicating read/unread for a feed.

Finally I will add that it is a feature that I was using in google reader so it is not such a ridiculous notion to have the option.

The easier way would be to use the userdefined stylesheet from the preferences ;-)

To be honest rather that wasting time reiterating myself I created a quick plugin: https://github.com/cas--/tt-rss-plugin- ... read_count

I wrote a plugin that hides every third feed on a rotating basis, every day except Sunday. I'd share it, but it's part of my ongoing project to port ttrss to run on the TI-89 graphing calculator.

Thanks for the plugin. I did the same and hid the counters with CSS just a couple of days ago.

One of the reasons that RSS never became massive, I think, is that unread counters made some users feel anxious about unread stuff. Traditional feed readers are very much like email, where unread counts are a necessity, since mail is supposed to be personally directed to you, unlike news. But if all you want is to scan through news -and most users just want that, see the success of iPad style crap like Flipboard- the unread counter doesn't help you. This is Dave Winer's argument (they guy who invented RSS) for river of news readers.
