Feature suggestion: Very quick filters

Postby davidm » 02 Nov 2013, 14:03

Why: because filters are the best feature of tt-rss, yet they may be slow to use, being in the second preference tab and complex.

The concept: quickly create a filter from selected text in an article, within a dialog, not entering preferences.

The basic options: when you select some words and click on Quick filter, you get only the Add action dialog from the filter configuration. That is, select action dropdown, action parameters, save and cancel. No more filter stuff: no match (it's the selected text), no multiple matches, no multiple actions, no label, no checkboxes. Select text, choose one action and go, that's the feature I'd like to have.

The not so basic options: there could be a previous option: New/Existing filter. One way to show it could be a dropdown whose first element is "New filter" and the other elements are the filters that already exist. If you choose New filter, you get the basic options. If you choose an existing filter, you get no options: the selected words are simply added as a new match to the filter you chose.

Where the Quick Filter button is: this is the most complicated part, I think. Possibilities are: a) Context menu: selected text within an article has no context menu right now, so it could be put there. However, overriding the browser's context options as copy, search, doesn't sound too good to me. b) Action dropdown. c) Selection dropdown. d) New toolbar button. e) Article header or footer. These four possibilities add the button in places that are already a bit crowded, so that might not be great either. My choice would be the Actions dropdown.

This is the idea I propose, either in tt-rss or as a plugin. Filtering is the reason I use tt-rss in the first place, since it has the best filtering of online readers. Filters allows me to go past the main problem with RSS: that neither I nor most people want to see everything from most sources. Making filters more accessible would make the reader simpler and nicer to use.

Bears welcome.

There's a c f hotkey btw. If you have an article open, it will pre-fill the filter definition with its title.

True. My bad, I never use hotkeys or shortcuts, I'm consistently impaired to remember them. Would you consider filling the definition with selected text, falling back to article title if nothing is selected? I think it makes sense, although it may not be worth the effort.

Anyway, I stand by my suggestion of a simplified interface. :) Maybe as a plugin.

Filter UI stays as it is, adding selection support shouldn't be hard.

I'm glad I searched past messages and found this one, from 2013, which basically is my feature request - and also informed me about "c f".

I went to this link https://github.com/gothfox/Tiny-Tiny-RS ... be6043e950 mentioned in a previous message hoping to find some information on streamlining the filter creation process even more, but that link 404s now.

What is the current state of the art for Instant Filters on tt-rss?

This thread begins with a feature request to quickly create filters.

It continues with your explanation of 'c f'. This is better, but still somewhat cumbersome.

A little further down, you post a link to a github commit, but that link 404s. Someone else in the thread comments that they like whatever once lived there.

So I am given to wonder if there is some faster way than the 'c f' method to create a filter that I cannot see.

In my dream-sequence fantasy, I imagine this feature working like this:
- I select the word "Rihanna" in an article.
- I right-click (or press a magic hotkey) which immediately adds this word to a global filter
- I'm given some kind of feedback to inform me the deed has been done
- I never see another article whose title contains "Rihanna"

> also good job necrobumping a thread from 2013

It's a gift.

I will never stop loving this software and everyone involved.
