1.7.8 to 1.7.9 visual presentation changes

Postby ralfonat » 18 May 2013, 23:53

Heya,

I'll keep it brief:

I LOVED the 1.7.8 look. It was crisp, sharp, just plain efficient. Now with 1.7.9 everything looks like magnified 1.2x and unread/read items look too similar etc. I am not complaining by any means, i'm sure theres good reason behind it. But for me, any chance to get the 1.7.8 look back into 1.7.9 ?

Many thanks in advance!

Put this in your user css to get rid of the larger fontsize:

Code: Select all

/* 1.7.9: Smaller fontsize */
body { font-size: 12px !important; }

Thanks sboulema I will try that.

However I guess that won't fix the other stuff like un/read items are both bold etc?

Anyway to copy over the old "theme" from 1.7.8 including all ?

Get tt-rss.css from 1.7.8, you might need to tweak a few minor things, but generally it should work.

I have to admit, after updating I had exactly the same thought. As the changes seem to be mostly connected to CSS, maybe its possible to have a menu option to change between the "old" and the "new" UI in a future version?

Yeah, also since for every tiny change in the interface there are people who think that's the best thing in the world and there are people who think it's literally Hitler maybe we should add every such change as an option too? Maybe buld a nice option tree out of them, fox I know you are excited about this idea!

Maybe fox could ship an additional "classic" theme

You're probably looking for this feature, implemented in 1.7.6: "Allow easily selecting CSS themes dropped into themes/"

Nice one, fox! :)

I personally love the design direction you're going with 1.7.9. There are some minor things I don't like which I changed in my custom stylesheet.

Maybe an option would be to use the tt-rss.css + cdm.css as default.css (selectable from the theme dropdown). So default.css is not an empty stylesheet but the real default styles.

Themes building on top of that can always do an @import "default.css".

Themes going in a completely different direction can leave this out and do everything from scratch. This would be a lot more flexible because we wouldn't have to overwrite new tt-rss styles over and over and from version to version. We're already pretty much in specifity hell. Okay, that's also "thanks" to dijit which is a bitch to restyle.

Users who want a "classic theme" would simply copy over the old tt-rss.css + cdm.css, add some adjustments and use it as a theme. Adjustments will often be necessary because the markup has always changed slightly over time.

PS: I know @import slows everything down quite a bit, but you get the idea.

Thanks for the hint, wasn't aware of that. Will check it out.

This makes a lot of sense, except for the option part.

Edit: oh you didn't mean adding an option for that, you need to be careful with this word here (lol).
