Update Frequency tweak

Postby lyallp » 30 Sep 2013, 03:15

I was just reviewing my feeds in light of the 'update performance regression' thread and was looking at the update frequency I have configured on my feeds.

I know that some of my feeds are updated weekly on a particular day of the week, or daily at a particular time, whilst others are updated much more frequently.

What are the thoughts on adding a numeric value which can be used by the update frequency to 'tune' the frequency.
For example,
  • Monthly - number 0 - 30 - day of month to refresh the feed.
  • Weekly - number 0 - 6 = day of the week on which to refresh the feed
  • Daily - number 0 - 23 = hour of day to refresh the feed
  • Hourly - number 0 - 59 = minute of hour to refresh feed.
  • Any other frequency simply ignores the number.

Anyway, loving tt-rss, use it all the time and really grateful that it exists.

I can see merit in that, so it'll probably be shot down ;)

LOL - I knew it would.

I guess I should have asked if the 'ttl' in conjunction with the 'pubDate' is taken into consideration when performing updates on a feed
(ie, pubDate + ttl = next time the feed is updated), thus saving superfluous requests to the Feed publishers.

Alternatively, if the feed settings override pubDate+ttl, so if I pull a feed every 15 minutes that only publishes every 4 hours, I am performing 15 redundant requests on the feed with the 16th request actually retrieving an update.

Oh no, 15 http requests! Something needs to be done about that!

Sure does, if you have thousands of subscribers, thats thousands of requests every 15 minutes rather than thousands very 4 hours (in my example).

Oh no, thousands of http requests. Whatever are we going to do. Maybe learn some perspective. No, it's too hard, let's add confusing knobs to the UI elements instead or silently ignore default behavior to confuse users.

Also, tt-rss supports http 304, which works much better than wanking over (obviously misconfigured because lol feed owners) ttl or pubdate or w/e.

In summary, this is a yet another terrible idea and everyone supporting it should feel terrible for doing so. It's not going to happen.

e: btw about this "thousands of users" thing: tt-rss is not going to scale for a cloud service replacement and it is a quite intentional design decision on my part.
