Run tt-rss on Windows without configuring WAMP

Postby ebell451 » 01 Apr 2013, 09:31

If you are interested in running/testing tt-rss on Windows and do not have access to web hosting nor do you want to fool around with WAMP, I put together a solution that will allow you to have tt-rss up and running in seconds [depending on your download and processing speed]. All of this was accomplished utilizing Server2Go (http://www.server2go-web.de). The download file is right around 104 MB. Here is what you get in the compressed file:
Simply download the file from http://ul.to/hmk4gn4t or https://www.dropbox.com/s/6oy7ojgp06ehy ... ver2Go.zip, uncompress it, and double-click on Start.exe.

**Edit - updated to latest version of tt-rss.**

Thanks for creating this great option. Loving it, since am able to test out the functionality before adopting it fully.

But am unable to update the TT-RSS from 1.5.6 Trunk to 1.7.8 using the updater. It says, " Checking for tar... Could not run tar executable (RC=1)."

Can you please help me to find a fix, please? Thanks again!

I updated the package to 1.7.8, but had to do so manually. The reason could be because tar isn't installed. You can update the installation by following the instructions found here: http://www.tt-rss.org/redmine/projects/ ... -upgrading.

Thank you. Everything is fine.
There is one question: how is it possible to synchronize TT-RSS on PC and web server?

For example, at home I use a WAMP version, at work TTRSS web version. Is it possible to synchronize their work?

You'd need to figure out away of syncing the two databases.
This site may be a good place to start.
http://superuser.com/questions/90301/sy ... -databases

.: edit :.
Or you could try playing around the the instances system plug in. you have to enable that in the configuration file. Don't know if that would accomplish what you are trying to do, but it might, and could potentially be easier than database syncing.
http://tt-rss.org/redmine/projects/tt-r ... dInstances
.: end edit :.

I think the easiest solution would be to just use the web version at home as well, then you wouldn't have to mess around with database synchronization.

Just out of curiosity, why are you using a local copy at home?

Understand your irony .. :-)
Out of curiosity installed WAMP. However, the meaning is ... I use a free hosting ... Sometimes the server is not available ... So, again, out of curiosity, asked about the synchronization ... I understand that it is more complicated than simply using the web version.

Figured there had to be some reason. Try playing with instances first, and see if that doesn't fit your needs, then if it doesn't, look into syncing. That or running your own server at home with an old computer, or maybe even something like a raspberry pi, or finding an inexpensive host.

Is there a way to have it update feeds in the background? It only seems to update feeds after I login.

This has been my main problem when running TTRSS over WAMP, since one of the recommended two methods is not supported, and the other doesn't seem to work at all. Is it functional in this setup?

This configuration is setup to perform as you mentioned...update feeds only while logged in or the browser is open. Being that this was a "portable" solution and to have tt-rss update in the background you need to run an application or service, this configuration was chosen for this solution.

Background updating is not working in this configuration. tt-rss will only update while the browser is open. This is the last option on http://tt-rss.org/redmine/projects/tt-r ... atingFeeds -- Simple background updates.
