Please excuse if I am stepping into someone else's turf... I believe that the "Please enjoy this bare page" might not be the best way to capitalize on Google Reader diaspora. I'd advise something more inviting for newcomers who may not understand computer jargon. And boasting that you are getting so much traffic that it brought down the server, of course.

Something like "We had to change our homepage to handle the recent increase in traffic. Please stay tuned, the complete site will be running again soon. Thanks for your interest."


Disclaimer: I have a personal interest in this. Just last month I taught 40+ people to use RSS readers, particularly Feedly (which is Google based). Increased adoption of TT-RSS is good for me.

1) All things considered I doubt nontechnical users are going to install tt-rss on their own server/hosting.

2) It's not a corporate site, I'm not selling anything to anyone. I don't need to post bland PR CYA messages. I'm sure fellow geeks would understand me being tongue-in-cheek about the whole slashdotting thing.

3) The entire page is quite technical and loaded with terms you actually need to know.

Agreed.
A lot of things might change in the future months : all readers will probably try to develop their own client and/or API, or might re-use an existing one. It would probably be a good time to push the ttrss API, and I think a friendlier message would be a good start to encourage that.
edit: just saw the answer. I think you are also targeting "dumb-geeks", who rent a small shared server and are able to follow a tutorial, but not much. But you've got a valid point, and I can understand that you don't want to bother with all this.

Hey! I AM one of those!

OK then. I immediately knew that the OP was poorly worded, but I was in a rush. Obviously, it makes no sense expecting complete newcomers to even try tt-rss right away. But they can get interested. tt-rss was just the second webapp I ever installed in an actual web server (and remains the hardest). And after that I tried to contribute translations and so on.

Anyway, it was more about the wording and general tone. I liked the softer version better.

Being quite a freetard myself I like this. But I wasn't asking for corporate blandness but FLOSS friendliness. I said in the OP I have an interest into RSS and feed readers getting wider adoption: until recently, an important part of my job was RSS crunching.

tt-rss has already lived longer than most feed reader projects, and it's fantastic (the only reader I know that meets my three requirements: open source, filters and RSS output). But I would like it better and meaner, with more support and faster development (the new plugin feature will surely encourage that). That's what I meant by "capitalizing on Google Reader diaspora". Not selling more, but making it better.

i can't imagine the amount of braincell fox put into this project. i have cross examine ton of rss reader late 2012.. and i settle down to tt-rss as my only rss reader!

I found the home page quite welcoming told me everything I needed to know and held my hand all the way through the installation process.

I am a programmer though.

I have shared my install of tt-rss to friends who used to use google reader. I have even put some effort to making it tablet-friendly. I have a few registered users and downloaded all the "share to x" plugins that are available. I can say, the Facebook, Twitter, Pocket and Pintrest are the ones my users are using the most. For me, to save articles for later, is Pocket. I always had GR open in a browser all its own as I use it to keep up with tech news for my work. tt-rss has saved me, allowing me to have a platform to view my rss feeds and keep them sync'd across multiple platforms and browser sessions.

It would be nice if you could change the title on the left from "Deckyon's RSS Feeds" to the first name of the person logged in...for instance "John's RSS Feeds"

You should already be able to by going into the preferences and hitting the "Customize" button and entering the title you want in the following code:
