Someone making money off TT RSS

Postby jimbow143 » 30 Mar 2015, 04:44

I'm sad to say after researching some bugs on on TT RSS I found a site hosting RSS and selling their services - https://tinytinyrss-servers.com/

I myself have donated to TT RSS and love this amazing project. Is there anyway we can get this site shutdown making money off FREE software?!?!?

Thanks,

Jimbow

People make money off WordPress, and Drupel, and ... countless other projects.

They are not selling TT-RSS, they are selling the service of TT-RSS. Some people want to use the software but don't know or want to learn how to manage a server and the software; that is for those people. It costs money and time to manage a server and keep software up to date, people deserve to be compensated for that.

I'm not affiliated with that site, but have done web development and hosting for clients and used applications like WordPress and others to get the job done. I still charge my clients because I'm investing my time and providing them a service.

This is a part of things being open source.

I'm sure fox will voice his thoughts as well...

It's not about "right" vs "wrong", or what people "deserve", it's about what the license allows. Hint: most common FOSS licenses allow this.

TT-RSS is GPLv3: https://github.com/gothfox/Tiny-Tiny-RSS/blob/master/README.md
GPL does not prohibit this: https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#DoesTheGPLAllowMoney

Hosting site does not claim that tt-rss is their own work (see attribution and link to tt-rss.org at bottom of page).

I can't speak to whether or not the hosting site complies with every detail of the GPLv3, but it looks like a good effort to comply with the spirit of the license. This all may be a moot point anyway, since hosting might not count as "distributing" the software. Seems like in that case the license would also favor the host.

I suspect fox doesn't care, otherwise he should change the license.

I see no problem with this whatsoever, otherwise I would've chosen something other than GPL. Same with android app.
