Free Hoster that support tt-rss?

Postby phpmysql » 02 Apr 2013, 17:17

Hi!
Are there any free hoster that support tt-rss and all the php function it needs?
I tried several but they all gave me an error message when starting tt-rss:
- open_basedir not supported
- allow_url_fopen disabled
- CURL function not present
- ...

Thanks
pm

Do what I did: I got an old computer, installed debian and web server (LAMP). Then connected it to my home router, access it through dyndns (free) and voila !! I have my own web/ttrss/any web server that I can access from everywhere (as long as i have internet connection).

you can check http://www.howtoforge.com/ for help on how to install a server from scratch.

I agree with Argoson. But if you don't have an extra computer just sitting there. You could try 000webhost.com. I have used them in the past and never had a problem. Though I have heard of some people that have. I believe they have everything you need to run tt-rss.

Count me among those who had problems with 000webhost.com. They disabled my account and deleted all my files (including a wiki), which I foolishly hadn't backed up in ages without any warning for "suspicious activity". It was just a personal site so I lost some notes and nothing really important, but it's annoying as hell.

You can also evaluate to use the free version of Amazon of AWS Server Cloud http://aws.amazon.com/free/
I'm using an ubuntu 12.04 installation with ttrss without any problem

OpenShift allows you to host tt-rss for free and there are quickstart solutions available, e.g. https://github.com/who-me/ttrss-fast-deployment or https://github.com/openshift-quickstart ... quickstart

The only thing I would watch with the 1yr Free Tier Micro instance is the I/O usage. I have 160 feeds and I blew through the 1,000,000 free I/O request limit in 2 days. Now costing me about 10c per day. It's pittance, but still.

So let me add a comment on my previous post (which was not intended to be an ad).

This is not classical hosting but PaaS so it spares you some of the work for the price of some limitations. I'm running my own installation of tt-rss on Openshift and I'm pretty fine with it. Using one the quickstarts linked above I think you can get up and running in less than an hour. So it might even be worth a try if you're not sure.

The only drawbacks I'm currently aware of are that sending e-mails rewrites the sender information and loading the page in the browser is pretty slow. But I don't have any comparison as that's the only installation of tt-rss I have access to.

That wasn't intended at your post, there was an outright ad above that got deleted.

Thanks, I haven't seen that one. But I thought mine might have been a bit short anyway so I used the opportunity to add some more information. :D

I have a dedicated server where I host my tt-rss site. If I have understood correctly you don't need a installation if you are a normal user, just a user om someones installation? Might be able to hook a couple of people up.

For anyone using Openshift, I created a quickstart that uses submodules to provide the latest versioned release. (I have to manually update the submodule, so it won't be instant, but it is more maintainable than the copied-in-place versions.) You can set it up pretty much instantly, just check the readme. (Once the bugs are fixed, you'll be able to use --from-code to set it up even more instantly. For now you need to create an empty app and then overwrite the repo.)

ETA: The bug has been acknowledged upstream (openshift) at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=950731 - the workaround is documented in the readme of the quickstart repo.

I was thinking about this. It would be a chance to share and it could also be good PR for the project.

"Adopt an abandoned Google reader". (Sarah McLaughlin soundtrack optional)

There could be a listing of available shares with their config ("3 users, feeds refreshed every 60 mins") or whatever.

Since the TTR profiles are portable, even if a sharing server had to close the adopted readers could export their config and import it into the next share.
