[Q] Difference between Labels and Tags?

Postby hrk » 25 Jul 2013, 23:35

Ok, maybe this is the trampoline for Comedy Bistro but.......... what is the difference between Labels and Tags?

Under the preferences, I can create labels, but then I don't see them anywhere.
Inside an article, I can touch the "+" and enter the text of a label, but then I don't see it anywhere.

[I haven't checked out if the text "etichetta" has been used both for "tag" and "label" in the italian translation, though]

I seem to distinctly recall explaining this before but can't find the post. Anyway.

Main difference is that labels you create and assign yourself, tags are automatically imported from the feed (<category> tags). There could be a shitload of different tags, but there is usually only a few labels.

The underlying use-case is that labels should represent topics you might be interested in. You can then use filters to assign articles to specific labels based on their content, category, feed, etc, which makes it easier to browse stuff you are interested in first.

Touching (+) edits tags, not labels. Labels can be added using right-click menu on article header.

Other stuff:

1. Tags were there before labels. Initial label implementation actually had users editing SQL by hand (lol, yeah).
2. There is an option to assign labels based on article content matching the actual label as a keyword. If your label stuff is simple enough, it could work well enough. E.g. create Android label, enable the option, everything android gets automatically filed under it.
4. Both labels and tags can be assigned by filters, you can even assign labels based on tags but not vice versa.
5. You can browse by both but only labels are shown in the feedlist because showing a huge list of tags is largely unintuitive. Oh, you can browse by (multiple) tags in Actions menu.

e: this got asked before so I guess I'll move this to kb.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't see an option to display results by tag in the Actions menu.

Do I need a plugin for this?
