Unsupported Platforms: what are the disadvantages?

I've only run tt-rss on an unsupported system, a Bluehost shared hosting account.

Can someone please help me understand the drawbacks of an unsupported system? What are the advantages of a dedicated (VDS) host? Thanks!

Depens on lots of things.

I have run ttrss on windows I had to set up task scheduler to run updater since windows does not have cron. Then I discovered docker and Im using docker image of ttrss.

I recently moved form a tt-rss installation on a shared hosting to a VPS (basic 5$/mo account on Digital Ocean)

The key differences I found:
- performance is orders of magnitude better, both in fetching feeds and in general responsiveness, both through browser and Android app
- I can now use PostgreSQL instead of MySQL, to please fox (and have built-in search).
- I can now use the update daemon, instead of a hack with scheduled tasks. Also, tasks are always executed (Sometimes purging failed)
- I can see logs!
- I can use full git toolchain for update, instead of git-ftp (Which is a very good software, but is not git.)

I already had plans to purchase a small VPS server, and tt-rss was one of the driving factors.
I also wanted it for other tinkering.
After the switch, I can say I am fully pleased.

It depends of type of unsupported system. In many cases it is much harder to get diagnostics information, because you have much less control over the system. And that's the reason they are unsupported.

on my old unsupported platform i had sometimes problems with feeds over https and with password protected feeds - and no glue where the problem was. Now on my supported platform everything is doing well

Thanks so much for the responses—great insights that I'd not thought of.

My shared BlueHost account seems to work pretty well, although it's not as responsive as I would like. Also, to enable SSL login, you must use their "free" shared SSL Certificate, though it comes at a cost; namely, there's a 100kb limitation for any embedded data (ouch!). My hunch is that all shared hosts have their own limitations.

I used DreamHost for some general hosting (not TT-RSS) a few years back. They allowed you to use your own SSL certificates but you had to pay about $4/month for a unique IP (don't know if they allow/support SNI now but back then it wasn't an option).

One of the advantages of using your own VPS is that you can get a free certificate from StartSSL and use encryption all the time. (Of course the biggest advantage is that TT-RSS actually runs like it should when hosted on a VPS.)
