TinyTiny on Openshift

Postby oliroe » 31 Jan 2016, 22:41

Hi

Been playing around with Openshift for most of the day and been unable to install Tiny from Gitlab. There were some quick start packages for Github that worked well.

Anyone had any luck and can give me some hints?

Thanks

I've used this almost two years ago to install ttrss on OpenShift: https://github.com/disconn3ct/tiny_tiny ... quickstart

Then been updating regularly via git. Custom themes have stopped working but besides that no problem so far.

I don't think this works anymore because ttrss isn't on Github anymore

See

What do you mean by not working? I can get a working install on OpenShift from disconn3ct's github. I'm still figuring out how OpenShift works, so I have not gotten around to updating my install.

The quickstart package posted on OpenShift points to a dead URL on github, so I think disconn3ct's version is the only quickstart left.

FYI openshift is terrible and I'm not really supporting that anymore, but I'll try to check in on pull requests as they come in.

That's a real shame as I've been using it since Google reader closed and it's been rock solid, quick and free.

Thanks for the heads up!

Actually, it's a little disconcerting how much hate they get around here. Why are they terrible? A More importantly, are you running ttrss on a different platform then? I was looking for a free hosted solution which is how I arrived at openshift. If that's not the right way to go I'm open to other ideas.

I think it's awesome. I run several websites on OpenShift, tt-rss being one of them. I've been running ttrss on openshift for 3+ years, and it's been working great for me.

I've described my original setup at the following link, a few things have changed since then (on both, openshift and ttrss ends), but they should be simple to figure out.

Along the way I've run it at rackspace, then Linode. Most recently (couple months ago) I moved over to AWS (EC2+RDS) because I needed more storage than Linode supplied. (I was using owncloud, which is local-storage-only, but I switched over to Seafile to get EC2 support.)

AWS free tier can probably support TTRSS, but even without it cost me $22 for the server+EBS ("local" storage) last month. The db offload added about $12, but I have a fairly large install with multiple apps, so you may be able to run it self-contained on a smaller instance. (I've also got about 1200 feeds.)

The reason I left openshift was the complete hash they made of "standard" shared web hosting. Strange paths, strange requirements, etc. RedHat did a big presentation recently at work where they tried to say it was different, but during the demo they refused to do anything at the command line. (Later one of my guys logged in for a quick check and said it was still a mess.) It isn't "cloud" so much as it is just old-school "multi-tenant hosting" after the usual RedHat fucking over.

Added bonus, when I was working on it they completely jacked up the postgres support (no vacuum support, etc) requiring periodic intervention by support to get it going again when the quota filled up.

Added bonus: You can get support here with installs on AWS/Linode/Rackspace/etc, since the platform isn't all jacked up.

lowendbox.com and lowendtalk.com feature many affordable VPS providers. Many are not good, but some are great; search for their quarterly polls to find the better providers.

Providers are "unmanaged" so you're on your own with setup and securing the server.

(I have no affiliation with either site.)

I've had mine on *Shitty unbelievable cheap VPS based in Canada* the last year or so, after moving from a more expensive host that had many features I wasn't using. You can create a server for like $30 one time fee (often less if they have a sale.) Uptime is pretty *Shitty*, I've lost *many* hours *recently*, after using them for other things about 3 years. Support *ignores me*, but you get what you pay for I guess.

***Edit***
This was originally a plug for the host I use, and I got (rightlfully) slapped for being spammy. Well, now going cheap has bit me in the ass, and my install has been unreachable for almost two weeks, and I'm going to spend some actual money (looks like $5-20 per month, depending on what I choose) for an actual reputable VPS service. I make a montly OPML backup of my sites, so at least I can still get my feeds with an RSS desktop client, and damn, I seriously miss having TT-RSS working.

I think I'm going to see if I get anywhere with Amit's tutorial since I already have a running instance on OpenShift. Until I've built something that I like better than theoldreader I'm not going to be willing to spend any money on hosting. In particular, I need my mobile experience to be much better than the default install provided.

My mom told me I am a special and unique snowflake.

EDIT: IRL she probably never actually said that, but why can't I say what I want from my install? I was hoping folks might tell me how to make that stuff happen.
