Internationalization and translations

Hi everybody

Are there any plans to internationalize the code (with gettext or something else) ?

If there was a plan for this, I could contribute with a french translation.

tt-rss is the best rss software I've seen since a long time, the lack of i18n is the only problem preventing me from using it on a large scale.

I must confess, I have I18N mentally filed as "a lot of boring work".

I would gladly accept patches, but otherwise don't expect it soon. While I fully understand that I18N is needed, wrapping string constants in gettext _() is excruciatingly boring.

I forgot: there also is an interesting problem of using gettext in javascript source (which contains some error messages and such) without creating crazy overhead. I can't figure this one right now.

Well, if this ever happens I'll gladly translate to norwegian.

This is not a huge issue for me though.

Well, I did some more I18N work, just finished integrating PHP-Gettext. The implementation in trunk (if enabled) currently gets the language from HTTP Accept-Language header automatically and enables the translation if it exists.

There is an (incomplete) .po file which contains a lot of strings for any translation volunteers to get started on here.

just have been playing around with it. Seems to me a very valuable tool.
I'm interested in where to put the translated file to (which directory)
I see a standard RU directory, should i create a Language directory? Put the messages.po in it? What about the other file in the RU directory, the messages.mo, do i need that to for my language?

Yep, you should create two subdirectories (like de_DE/LC_MESSAGES) and place messages.po there.

Initial translations file is created by update-translations.sh, and is called messages.pot. Copy that to LC_MESSAGES/messages.po and the script should take care of merging any changes for you later.

.mo files are just "compiled" .po files, the aforementioned script should take care of generating those for you, just run it when you are finished editing messages.po.

Don't forget to send in any I18N work.

OK, when done, translated files will be sent to you/site for download.
But it takes time, since there's a huge amount of items to be translated.

Send it to cthulhoo-at-gmail.com (the translation can be incomplete, that's no problem).
