Online going down at 15.11.2012

Postby fox » 18 Oct 2012, 19:21

I feel that Online has outlived its purpose as a stress and bug testing tool for tt-rss code (and I'm mostly out of spare hardware anyway) so it's going to be shut down permanently in a month at 15 nov 2012.

I'm going to stop feed updates at Online in three weeks at 8 Nov 2012 so that people who are too lazy to read forum RSS feed would feel motivated to check what's going on.

I suggest everyone to use builtin tt-rss data export function to get their stuff while it is available.

Hi!

This is sad news and make me a bit worried. I make heavy use of TT-RSS for many purposes. Many of my channels are shared in bloggs. I can even say that TT-RSS is the centre of my information hub. One of my channels are mirrored to a blog with 750 readers in September and will have more of them this month. I like that every feed I read and every label I use is a RSS feed in it self.

So, are there any way to encourage a continuation of an on-line solution?
Raise money for a new server or something?

I am willing to pay a monthly fee for a service and I am also willing to share a cloud setup for TT-RSS. I am even willing to put some effort in it (have quite some linux experience).

I have tried about every web-based RSS I can find and TT-RSS is the only one I like, there are o second or third alternative. Google Reader is on fourth place but you can not syndicate using RSS to other than blogger-bloggs.

Just for curiosity, what is the server setup and what Internet connection have you been using? For how many active users?
Do you know if there is a hosted TT-RSS anywhere? I have searched but not found any.

How will this affect the general TT-RSS development?

BR
Erik

If you have the experience with linux and you don't mind paying a bit for a solution, why don't you get a low end virtual private server?

I run my ttrss install along with a slew of other apps and websites on a VPS with 512mb ram, 50gb hd, 2 cores and 1tb of bandwidth for 6.95 a month from buyvm.

I have other accounts but this is my main one i use for production sites since it's been so stable.

Sad also at this news! Is it possible to come up with a fee-based web service?

I use TTonline to cherry-pick from hundreds of podcast feeds and pipe into a singe feed with mp3 attachments. No other service seems abe to do this (GReader used to...but stopped).

While i am writing...Thanks for your great work

Will we still be able to load the scripts on our own server and make it work?

I've been using tt-rss online for almost 3 years. Unlike many others who frequent this forum, I don't have the programming knowledge or time to set up my own tt-rss server. Heck, I can't even understand most of the message traffic in the support forum (and I'm a graduate degreed engineer). What's a GIT anyway? :?

I depend on tt-rss online for reading more than a dozen news feeds. I make heavy use of the exclusion filter. But the reason I migrated from google reader is because it has no way to exclude duplicates. As it turns out, news feeds like the AP and NYT typically submit certain stories multiple times during the day to keep them at top of their client feed list. This is a carryover from the teletype days. Since google reader displays every instance, it takes me much longer to scan all the feeds.

I'm with BR... I'd be willing to contribute to a new server. I could do $100 up front, or pay $5/mo for a subscription service.

Hello guys,

i don't use the 'online' site since the site is more for testing purpose.
fox, i think your demo should setup to reset the data back to default once a day or every x hours to help fix the overloading issue.
i can donate a small server for you . Also as a token of appreciation for your continuous work on tt-rss. :p

Alvin, yea.. i think "online" site refer to the demo site. It will not affected our own hosted tt-rss.

About my personal experience with tt-rss:
I have been using tt-rss on my server for sometime now. So far so good. I am loving it! tt-rss is one of the best among all i have seen among open source rss reader projects. One big reason why i am moving to own rss reader is due to privacy concern. As many of you are aware, google been collecting data about everyone's surfing behavior( eg. like what you read, click, see when using their service ..this include reader)

ginahoy, you know i have been brainstorming to create a simple tool that allow zero-programming knowledge user to have access to their own private rss reader w/ a click etc. It could be that you want privacy on the internet or like a feature provided by tt-rss.. (i haven't use the exclusion feature found in tt-rss yet though.. :p . )

The reason why i am stepping forward to post this is i think i can use my resources & skill to help people like ginahoy who like to use tt-rss but do not have the knowledge in doing so.

Hope my little help can shine everyone's life alittle more. :)

-joseph

p.s I have been running a web hosting company since 2001 @ mxhub that provide web hosting, virtual server, dedicated servers around the world.. (servers stationed in usa, europe and asia etc) ..

Like said above, if you are willing to pay money, get a cheap VPS (those cost peanuts now or so I hear) and install tt-rss for yourself. Problem solved.

Performance data I gathered from Online has been useless for a while now. Providing free or paid or whatever service to people "just because" has never been an intention behind it, so I'm not going to do that. I have other things to do.

This has always been software you are supposed to install for yourself, which what I suggest everyone to do. :)

Q&A:

Will we still be able to load the scripts on our own server and make it work?

Of course. This only concerns http://online.tt-rss.org/, a free hosted service I've been running for a few years.

How will this affect the general TT-RSS development?

Why would it affect it at all?

Just for curiosity, what is the server setup and what Internet connection have you been using? For how many active users?

I've been using whatever scrap PCs I had at work. The current one is some Athlon64 from 2008. 52 users.

fox, i think your demo should setup to reset the data back to default once a day or every x hours to help fix the overloading issue.

Wait, what? This has nothing to do with the demo which runs on a separate machine which hosts tt-rss.org and my other (mostly work-related) stuff.

As a test i just got a 128mb VPS from OVH. Installed a script I use for building out nginx w/ php and mysql and had ttrss installed from trunk in less than 5 minutes.

If anyone would like help setting up ttrss on their own server or a VPS, let me know.

If you can post a brief howto topic for less technical people, I'll sticky it.

what do you think of this hosted service for non-technical individual like gina? check >>> http://www.privateoss.com
-Include secure access feature.. eg. https://

Have a rss reader & a todo list (another great open source software on the net) for a small monthly fee. Will this idea work out ?

Interesting.
What ToDo list software do you have in mind?
How will it be owned/governed? Community, Company, Private?

Can I install tt-rss on a hosted sever with godaddy? My hosting account runs Linux and has MySQL support.
