Dedicated Server Recommendation

Postby Striker21 » 06 Sep 2016, 22:23

Seeing there's some smart people around here, I though to ask for two cents at least :)

Any thoughts, not sure to priority CPU cores, threads, GHz, RAM, I know i need SSDs clearly (+separate SATA or SSD only)?

If I'm to choose a server option capable of easily handling the following:

  • TTR-SS running with PostgreSQL and updating around 3000 feeds continuously
  • Custom CURL based scraper handling 500 sites without feed continuously
  • Potentially Sphinx server to handle searching as data grows beyond using built in full text indexing of PostgreSQL
  • Websites with 100.000 visits per month (light to medium load, easily running on £15 a month web host now, typical premium package)
  • NGIX and MySQL server for general website (OpenCart eCommerce and regular news like site)
  • Room to grow and not struggle with above tasks

E.g. the cheaper HOST-32L | Intel Xeon D | 4c/8t | 2.2/2.6 GHz |32GB RAM | 2x 480GB SSD Raid SOFT be still more than plenty or would I likely need more cores and RAM or faster CPU? https://www.ovh.co.uk/dedicated_servers/ any and all thoughts welcome as I know there's likely not a 100% right answer based on the limited information supplied.

I do have a VPS there, but not locked to OVH, though is not Kimsufi just selling OVH in any case? Anyway the link to OVH simply to limit the scope of choice. So what you do guys think in this case, thoughts, I know fox got plenty he might decide to share with me or not :-)

I just said it cause it will be way cheaper then traiditional dedicated servers. You may check other kimsufi brands also.

At Framasoft (https://framasoft.org), we provide 2 TTRSS instances (on https://framanews.org).

We are using a dedicated EX40SSD server (https://www.hetzner.de/en/hosting/produkte_rootserver/ex40ssd) (i7, 32GiB RAM, 2x256GiB disk) to host ±500 users, with a maximum number of 100 RSS feeds. I don't have the exact number of feeds, but it surely is over 3 000. It hosts a Diaspora* database too.

TTRSS uses PostgreSQL, continuously updating feeds and indexing with sphinx.

It runs smoothly :-)

But we had to remove the PostgreSQL full-text indexing since it took a large amount of space (more than 50GiB) we don't have so much space.

I think your choice of server is a good one.

I'm afraid that you do not know enough yet to settle on a server beyond a guess. Munin monitoring or something akin to it should give you an idea of the server's bottle neck. If you are already running a virtual machine, how about looking at the results from those and see where you need more power.

Most, if not all, hosting sites will allow you to migrate form one machine to a more powerful one so getting more power is easy. Getting less is more tricky. And I am not even going into cloud architectures…

Hello, you have ±500 users witch PostgreSQL database on server without ECC RAM? Are you not afraid of memory/data corruption? Thanks

Nope, I'm not afraid. I never encountered any data corruption, and if there was, I'm using barman (http://pgbarman.org) to continuously backup the data, so I would be able to retrieve a safe backup anytime.

Thank you for reply. Barman is nice for backup. But you may encountered data corruption without that you know about it (silent data corruption https://www.fiala.me/pubs/papers/sc12-redmpi.pdf or as unstability
I just want to say that in the long run it is potentially dangerous and inconvenient - especially now when DDR4 memory with ECC are very cheap :-)
